Geography of Ahmadabad

Ahmadabad,or Ahmedabad, India, the chief city of Gujarat state. The city is on the Sabarmati River, 285 miles (460 km) north of Mumbai (Bombay). Ahmadabad is a major center for the production of cotton textiles and also manufactures a great variety of other consumer goods. Several technical schools and Gujarat University are here. Ahmadabad is a sacred city of the Jain religion, and has many 15th- to 17th-century mosques and tombs. Jami Masjid, a mosque completed in 1424, is noted for its sanctuary with 260 carved pillars supporting 15 stone domes.

Ahmadabad was founded in 1411 by Ahmad Shah as the capital of the Gujarat kingdom. In 2001, the city was severely damaged by an earthquake.
